Island of HVAR has a very mild Mediterranean climate, similar to Greece and southern Italy.
It's characteristics are long and
hot summers, usually dry with not a lot of rainfall, and mild winters that can
sometimes feel cold,
due to north wind Bura and it's wind factor. As HVAR is
an island, wind is important weather and climate factor that influences
nature around the island. Winds that blows on and around Island of Hvar are:
Bura - north wind that blows from mainland to the sea
Jugo - southern worm wind, blowing from the open sea
Levant - morning wind that blow from the east
Pulenat - moist west wind which is rather frequent during springtime
Maestral - Wind Maestral is created due to changing differences between the temperatures of the mainland and the sea, when air above the mainland becomes so hot by the afternoon that creates the Maestral wind which blows from the West to the East along the croatian coast. Maestral is popular summer wind. It brings freshness and breeze to Hvar's summers as well as it creates a great playground on Hvars's waters for windsurfers and sailors
Tramuntana - the name tramontana comes from the Italian word 'tramonto' which means sunset. It's a northern thermal wind (usually it's a little bit colder) and blows in the evening when the weather is stable
It is almost as though the maestral was created for pleasant and carefree sailing without maneuvering because its force is constant and its nature is predictable and mild. While the bura and jugo, each in their own way, offer yachtsmen excitement and challenge, the maestral guarantees pure pleasure during which you can enjoy in the sea without any worries. Due to the fact that, at sunset, the necessary conditions for the creation of the maestral disappear, at the first sign of darkness, a gentle night force 3 breeze starts to blow from the mainland to give way at sunrise to a calm sea that will, on a regular basis, once again around noon be replaced by the refreshing maestral. Even though the Adriatic sea does not belong to seas that are dangerous and unpredictable, and sailing can take place all year round, nevertheless, the most favorable conditions are from mid-June to mid-October when even those with little experience can enjoy in sea adventures.
Vegetation
Being a part of Mediterranean region, HVAR's vegetation is Mediterranean too. More than 60% of HVAR's surface is covered by dense conifer woods ( some varieties of pine and cypress) or other Mediterranean plants : holm oak, carob, bay and olives, as well as scrubs of varieties of heather and herbs : rosemary, sage, lavender, marjoram, oregano.. Hvar wad densely populated by various plant few thousands years ago, when Greeks arrived here too. As far as animals are concerned, variety of sea life around the island is particularly rich, due to Island's largely unpolluted waters, including fish, various crabs, octopuses, squids, sea urchins etc. See more about fish around Hvar and fish species of Croatia. Sharks are rarely seen but they do live in the Adriatic too. On Hvar there is a lot of jackals (" cagalj") and mongooses, as well as some wild boars, hare, pheasants and black birds too. Most of them are very hard to see as they tent to stay away from people, except birds that can be seen and heard all year around, as well as crickets that like to sing during hot summer's days. sometimes, one can find tortoises in the bushed too.
